The Kiwiana Town

Enjoy a truly authentic nature experience at New Zealand’s official ‘Kiwiana Town’ which embraces and display the country’s most significant, unique cultural icons.

Ōtorohanga is a rural ‘Kiwiana’ King Country town that celebrates and display popular Kiwi culture (kiwiana) with icons and traditions of Kiwiana murals, giant kiwi sculptures and heroes like Sir Edmund Hillary. Ōtorohanga is a service town, located in the Waikato region in the North island of New Zealand.

The Kiwiana town with its colourful hanging flower baskets, is only 15-minutes drive to the world-famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Black Water Rafting and caving adventures and is only 1-hour drive from Hobbiton Movie Set and the stunning West Coast beaches.

Along Ed Hillary Walkway and the town’s shop windows are Kiwiana displays – All Blacks, Aunt Daisy, buzzy bees, marmite, farm dogs and pavlova. Even the public toilets are an amusing tribute to “Kiwiana’. To the delight of visitors, The Jim Barker Memorial Playground also incorporates Kiwiana.

At the Ōtorohanga Kiwi House and Native Bird Park visitors can view up close Kiwi birds, especially the Spotted Kiwi. The Kiwi House & Native Bird Park is also home to many other native birds and reptiles, including various duck species, waterfowl, parrots and tuataras.

Enjoy walking through New Zealand’s largest dome aviary, wetlands, ponds and wooded areas. Kiwiana aside, Ōtorohanga also has a good choice of cafés, shops and places to stay.
